Navy Warrant Officers: A Legacy of Excellence For over two centuries, Navy Warrant Officers have played a pivotal role in the strength and success of the United States Navy. As one of the four initial ranks of the U.S. Navy, their accomplishments include: command at-sea, creation of the "Don't Give Up The Ship" flag, creation of the 1818 U.S. flag, first flight to the North Pole, first WWII recipient of the Medal of Honor, and creation of the "Sailor of the Year" program. The culmination of their efforts resulted in 20 U.S. ships named after Warrant Officers.
